The Word on the Street

4.4/5 (139 reviews)
👍 Owners upgrading from kit lenses are blown away by the sharpness and contrast, calling it a night and day difference.
👍 The compact size and light weight get a lot of love from hikers and travelers who hate lugging heavy full-frame glass.
🤔 A few photographers wish it was a constant f/2.8 for low light work, but most agree the trade-off for size is worth it.

प्रमाण

Performance

Autofocus is where this lens really surprised us. It's in the 98th percentile for AF speed, and you feel it instantly. The linear motor is dead silent and snaps into focus with zero hunting, which makes it a killer companion for 4K video work. Optically, it's a standout too, landing in the 93rd percentile. The combination of aspherical and ED elements with that Nano Surface Coating keeps flare and ghosting under control, even shooting into the sun. Sharpness is excellent across the frame, though you'll see a slight dip in the corners wide open at 8mm. Stop down to f/5.6 and it's crisp edge to edge.

vs Competition

The obvious rival is the Olympus 7-14mm f/2.8 PRO. That lens is a stop faster on the long end and goes wider, but it's heavier, can't take filters without a bulky adapter, and costs more. The Panasonic's 67mm filter thread is a huge practical win for landscape shooters who live with ND and polarizing filters. If you need the extra width and speed for astrophotography, the Olympus makes sense. For everyone else, the Panasonic's range, filter compatibility, and lighter weight make it the smarter daily driver. The Viltrox 15mm f/1.7 is a fun, fast prime alternative, but it's a completely different tool with no zoom flexibility.

Value & Pricing

The price spread on this lens is wild, ranging from $1,148 to an absurd $243,105 across vendors. Obviously, ignore that high outlier. At the real street price around $1,100, this lens is worth every penny for the right shooter. If you're a landscape or travel photographer on MFT who needs weather sealing and top-tier optics, this is the best ultra-wide zoom you can buy. Just don't pay a cent over $1,200.

Overview

This is the wide-angle zoom that Micro Four Thirds shooters have been begging for. The Panasonic Leica 8-18mm f/2.8-4.0 is a stunning piece of glass that delivers the kind of sharpness and build quality you'd expect from that red Leica badge, all in a package that won't break your back. The one thing to know? It's an absolute gem for landscape and travel photographers who want a versatile ultra-wide to standard-wide zoom without the bulk of full-frame equivalents.

Common Questions

Q: Can I use screw-on filters with this lens?

Absolutely. It takes standard 67mm filters, which is a huge advantage over bulbous front element lenses like the Olympus 7-14mm. Slap on a polarizer or ND filter and you're good to go.

Q: Is this lens good for astrophotography?

It's okay, but not ideal. The f/2.8 at the wide end is usable, but you'll want something faster like a dedicated f/1.4 or f/1.8 prime if you're serious about capturing the Milky Way. The aperture drops to f/4.0 as you zoom in, which really limits you.

Q: Does the lens stabilization work with Olympus bodies?

Yes, but you'll want to pick one system. The lens has optical stabilization, and Olympus bodies have in-body stabilization. They don't work together, so choose whichever gives you better results. For most Olympus shooters, the IBIS is so good you can just turn off the lens OIS.

Who Should Skip This

If you're looking for a fast, constant aperture zoom for low light or shallow depth of field, this isn't it. Go grab the Olympus 7-14mm f/2.8 PRO instead. And if you're even thinking about macro work, just walk away. This lens is one of the worst we've seen for close-up detail.

Verdict

The Panasonic Leica 8-18mm is the best ultra-wide zoom for Micro Four Thirds if you value practicality and optical excellence over raw speed. It's sharp, fast to focus, and built to survive real weather. The variable aperture is the only real compromise, and for most daylight landscape and travel work, you'll never notice it. This lens earns a permanent spot in our recommended kit.
