Resumo

The 30-Second Version

This OM System 100-400mm packs incredible stabilization and sharp optics into a lightweight body, giving you 800mm equivalent reach without the backache. The slow aperture and mediocre build keep it from perfection, but at around $1000 it's a killer wildlife tool. Worth it if you need to get close from afar in decent light.

Pros & Cons

Prós

  • Insane stabilization that locks down the frame handheld. 100th
  • Sharp enough to crop into an 800mm equivalent shot without losing detail. 98th
  • Weather sealing makes it a reliable partner in bad weather. 88th
  • Lightweight and compact for a super telephoto zoom.

Contras

  • Slow f/5-6.3 aperture struggles in anything but bright light.
  • Build quality feels more like a consumer lens than a $1000+ one.
  • Bokeh is harsh and distracting in busy backgrounds.
  • Macro performance is underwhelming for close-up detail work.

Performance

Sharpness is where this lens really shines. Optical quality sits around the 95th percentile in our database, so you can crop in hard and still see feather detail. Stabilization is even better, genuinely the best we've ever measured on a tele zoom, holding steady at 7 stops with a compatible OM System body. Autofocus is a mixed bag; it's accurate but not as snappy as the top-tier telephotos, landing right in the middle of the pack. The slow aperture means you'll need good light or a steady hand, and the macro capabilities are mediocre at best. Build quality is another weak spot, feeling a bit plasticky compared to what you'd expect at this price, which lands it in the bottom third of our rankings.

vs Competition

Direct competitors are weirdly scarce. The Panasonic 100-400mm f/4-6.3 is the closest thing, trading blows on sharpness and stabilization. Among the lenses we were given, none really match its purpose. The Canon RF 28-70mm f/2.8 is a completely different beast for full-frame, and the Nikon Z 18-140mm on DX doesn't touch this reach. Even the Sigma 10-18mm f/2.8 and Viltrox 56mm f/1.7 are non-starters for wildlife. So if you're deep in the OM System ecosystem and want to photograph distant critters, this lens is basically in a class of its own, but that also means you don't have many alternatives.

Preço

Value & Pricing

Pricing is all over the place, honestly. We've seen it as low as $1015 at Newegg and as high as a goofy $278,531 from some random sellers (ignore that). At around a grand, it's a fair deal for the reach and stabilization, especially since there's nothing else quite like it in Micro Four Thirds. If you pay much more than that, though, you're getting into territory where you could grab a used high-end prime or a different system entirely. Stick to the lower end of that spread and you'll feel okay about the purchase.

Overview

Look, if you shoot Micro Four Thirds and need serious reach without lugging a bazooka, this OM System 100-400mm is your lens. It gives you a 200-800mm equivalent field of view in a package that weighs barely over a kilo, which is absurdly portable for what it does. Weather sealing and 7 stops of Sync IS mean you can chase birds in a drizzle and still come home with tack-sharp shots.

But it's not a magic wand. The f/5-6.3 max aperture is slow, and the build quality doesn't scream 'pro' despite the price. Autofocus is fine, not fantastic, and if you're hoping for creamy bokeh you'll be disappointed. Still, for wildlife and outdoor sports where reach matters more than light-gathering, it's a standout.

Common Questions

Q: How effective is the stabilization on this lens?

With a compatible OM System or Olympus body, you get up to 7 stops of 5-axis Sync IS, which we found ridiculously capable. You can handhold sharp shots at shutter speeds that would normally be a blurry mess.

Q: Can I use this lens for macro photography?

While it offers 0.57x magnification, it's not a true macro lens. You can get decent close-ups of larger insects or flowers, but dedicated macro lenses will give you more detail and better working distance.

Q: Is the autofocus fast enough for birds in flight?

It's reliable but not class-leading. For predictable subjects it does fine, but fast, erratic movement might push it past its comfort zone. It's average among super-tele zooms in our testing.

Who Should Skip This

Skip this if you need a lens that works well indoors or at dawn and dusk, because the f/5-6.3 aperture demands bright sun. Also, if premium build quality matters as much as reach, look at something like the Olympus 300mm f/4 IS Pro instead, since this one feels a bit cheap for the price.

Verdict

Wildlife shooters and birders on Micro Four Thirds, this lens was made for you. The combination of portable reach and best-in-class stabilization makes it a no-brainer for long hikes or from a hide in good light. If you can find it near the lower end of its price range, you'll be thrilled with the sharpness. Just don't expect it to double as a portrait lens or save you in low light, and accept that the build is more 'workhorse' than 'heirloom.'
