Performance
The i7-1185G7 is a 4-core chip from 2020, and it sits in the 26th percentile for CPUs in our database. That's not great, but the 32GB of RAM is the saving grace here. It's in the 73rd percentile, which means you can run a stupid number of browser tabs, Excel sheets, and Slack channels without the system choking. The Iris Xe graphics are integrated and about average, so don't expect to game on this thing. Our gaming score for this laptop is 14.9 out of 100, which is a polite way of saying 'stick to Solitaire.'

vs Competition
Against the Apple MacBook Air M4, this Latitude gets absolutely destroyed on CPU performance, screen quality, and battery life. The M4 is in a different league. But the MacBook Air starts at a much higher price, and you won't find 32GB of RAM for anywhere near USD 550. The ASUS Zenbook UX3405CA is a closer competitor in the Windows world, with a much better screen and newer processor, but again, you'll pay more. If you need a cheap, RAM-heavy Windows machine for office work, the Latitude holds its own. If you want anything resembling modern performance or a premium display, look elsewhere.

Value & Pricing
At USD 550 to USD 774 across US listings, this is a solid deal if you need RAM and storage above all else. The CAD 899 listing in Canada is also reasonable. But shop carefully. The spread between USD 550 and USD 774 is significant, and you want the lower end of that range for a refurb with a 4-year-old CPU. If you're paying closer to USD 774, you're getting into territory where newer options start to make more sense.

Overview
The Dell Latitude 7420 is a business workhorse that's landed in refurbished territory, and honestly, that's where the value is. You're getting 32GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD in a portable 14-inch package, which is a spec combo that still handles serious multitasking. The catch? It's a refurb, so condition is a lottery, and the CPU is showing its age compared to newer silicon.
Common Questions
Q: Can this laptop handle gaming?
No. The Iris Xe integrated graphics are fine for video playback and light photo editing, but our gaming score for this machine is 14.9 out of 100. You'll struggle to run anything beyond 2D indie games or very old titles at low settings.
Q: Is the battery life good on a refurbished unit?
It varies. Some buyers report long battery life, but others have received units with battery health below the advertised 80% capacity. Always check battery health immediately after purchase and contact the vendor if it's under 80%.
Q: Is the touchscreen worth it?
It's a nice bonus, especially for scrolling through documents or pinch-zooming in meetings. But the screen itself is only 1920x1080 and sits in the 21st percentile for display quality in our database, so don't expect vibrant colors or high brightness.
Who Should Skip This
If you care about screen quality, modern CPU performance, or a pristine device, this isn't it. The display is mediocre, the processor is aging, and refurb condition is a gamble. Go get a MacBook Air M4 or an ASUS Zenbook instead if you can stretch your budget. If you're a gamer, this is absolutely not the laptop for you.
Verdict
The Dell Latitude 7420 is a budget-friendly way to get 32GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD in a portable business laptop. It's not exciting, it's not fast by modern standards, and the screen is mediocre. But for office work, web browsing, and heavy multitasking, it gets the job done. Just buy from a vendor with good support and check the battery health immediately.
