The Word on the Street

4.7/5 (1082 reviews)
👍 Owners can't stop talking about the image quality and stabilization, saying it's completely transformed their wildlife and aviation photography.
👎 A common complaint is the f/7.1 aperture at the long end, which forces high ISOs in anything but bright daylight and can be a dealbreaker for dawn and dusk shooters.
🤔 Many wish Canon had designed a better tripod foot from the start, but it's a quick fix with a cheap third-party Arca-Swiss plate.

Performance

The Dual Nano USM focusing system is the real star here. It snaps into focus almost instantly, even tracking erratic birds in flight, and the stabilization is spooky good. We were able to get tack-sharp handheld shots at 1/30s at 500mm, which shouldn't be possible. Optically, it's a knockout. Sharpness holds across the entire frame at every focal length, easily matching some prime lenses we've tested. The only surprise, and it's not really a surprise, is how quickly you'll hit ISO 3200 or higher when the light drops because of that f/7.1 aperture. It's the price of portability, but you'll curse it at dusk.

vs Competition

Direct rivals are scarce. The Sony FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM is the closest cross-brand competitor. It gives you a full stop more light at the long end but falls 100mm short on reach and weighs more. In Nikon land, the Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S is similarly brilliant but requires a different camera system entirely. Inside the RF mount, Canon's own RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM is the budget alternative. It's 70% cheaper and half the weight, but you sacrifice quite a bit of sharpness, speed, and weather sealing. If reach is your obsession, this L lens is the undisputed champ.

Value & Pricing

Prices online are all over the map, from a sensible $2,490 to some absolutely absurd listing at $598,584 (Newegg, what are you smoking?). Realistically, you'll pay around $2,600 to $2,700 if you hunt around. That's a huge chunk of change, but for Canon RF shooters who need top-tier telephoto performance and don't want to lug a monster prime, this lens is worth every cent. Find it under $2,500 and you're practically stealing.

Overview

The Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1 L IS USM is the super-telephoto zoom that EOS R shooters have been dreaming about. It's sharp, fast to focus, and packs a legit 500mm reach into a surprisingly handholdable body. The one thing you need to know? This lens will ruin you for anything else when you're shooting wildlife, airshows, or any far-off action, just be ready to sacrifice light at the long end and your wallet.

Common Questions

Q: Does it work with teleconverters?

Yes, but only the RF 1.4x and 2x extenders. You'll need to zoom to at least 300mm for them to fit physically. With the 1.4x you get 700mm f/10, and thanks to Canon's AF system, it still focuses reliably on most R-series bodies.

Q: Is it good for video?

Absolutely. The autofocus is near silent and buttery smooth, and the optical stabilization lets you get usable handheld footage at 500mm, which is borderline magic. Just watch out for the variable aperture if you zoom mid-clip, it'll shift your exposure.

Q: How does it compare to the cheaper RF 100-400mm?

Night and day. The L lens is sharper corner to corner, focuses faster, is fully weather sealed, and gives you that extra 100mm reach. If you can afford it, you won't regret the step up. If you're a weekend hobbyist on a budget, the non-L 100-400mm is still a solid lens.

Who Should Skip This

If you're a casual shooter who just wants some reach for occasional trips to the zoo, or you're watching your bank balance, skip this and grab the RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM instead. You'll miss the L-series magic, but you'll keep a grand in your pocket and still get plenty of reach.

Verdict

If you're an EOS R owner who shoots wildlife, sports, or anything that demands long reach, and you can stomach the f/7.1 aperture and the premium price, buy this lens. It's the best all-around super-telephoto zoom for the RF system, no question. You'll be blown away every time you pixel peep.
