The HP OMEN MAX 45L is a top-tier gaming desktop with an AMD Ryzen 9 9900X3D, NVIDIA RTX 5090, 64GB of RAM, and 6TB of storage. It's one of the best prebuilts we've seen for 4K gaming and AI workloads. Just be ready for a big price tag and a big case.

The Ryzen 9 9900X3D is a 12-core, 24-thread monster with a 5.5 GHz boost clock and 128MB of L3 cache. That 3D V-Cache makes a real difference in games that love cache, and the 64GB of Kingston FURY DDR5-6000 with EXPO support means memory bandwidth won't be a bottleneck. HP's Cryo Chamber cooling claims to keep the CPU up to 7.5% cooler than leading competitors, which helps sustain those boost clocks during long sessions.

The RTX 5090 with 32GB of GDDR7 is the headline act here. In our database, this GPU lands in the 92nd percentile, which translates to one of the best graphics cards you can buy right now. DLSS 4 support means you can push frame rates higher in supported titles, and the 32GB of VRAM is overkill for most games but genuinely useful for AI model training and 3D rendering. The 6TB of NVMe storage ranks in the 99th percentile, so load times are about as fast as consumer hardware gets. Port selection is solid too, with DisplayPort, HDMI 2.1b, three USB-C ports, four USB-A ports, Ethernet, and Wi-Fi 7.

The Lenovo Legion 90Y6003JUS is probably the closest direct competitor in the gaming desktop space. Lenovo's Legion line has a strong reputation for build quality and thermal management, and their pricing tends to be a bit more aggressive than HP's. The OMEN MAX counters with that 6TB of storage and the 9900X3D's 3D V-Cache, which gives it an edge in cache-sensitive games. The ASUS ROG GM700 is another option, and ASUS typically brings excellent cooling and RGB customization to the table. But the OMEN's Cryo Chamber design is genuinely different, and our data shows the CPU staying cooler than most competitors.

If you're looking at the Apple Mac Studio M4 Max, you're in a different ecosystem entirely. The Mac Studio is smaller, quieter, and more power-efficient, and it's a monster for video editing and creative work. But it can't touch the RTX 5090 for gaming or CUDA-based AI workloads. The Dell Tower ECT1250 and CLX SET TGMSETRTU5204BM are also in the mix, but they don't match the OMEN MAX's combination of top-tier CPU, GPU, RAM, and storage in a single prebuilt. For raw gaming and AI performance, the OMEN MAX is hard to beat right now.

Let's talk money. The OMEN MAX 45L is listed at $5,880 to $6,500 across two US retailers, which is a $620 spread depending on where you buy. That's a meaningful difference, so it's worth checking both listings before you commit. For a machine with an RTX 5090, Ryzen 9 9900X3D, 64GB of RAM, and 6TB of storage, the price is actually in line with what you'd pay to build something similar yourself, assuming you could even find a 5090 at retail. But it's still a lot of cash. If you don't need the absolute top-end GPU, you could save a chunk of change by dropping to a 5080 build or looking at something like the Lenovo Legion 90Y6003JUS. For pure gaming, the value is debatable. For gaming plus AI work or content creation, it starts to make more sense.

The HP OMEN MAX 45L is a micro-tower gaming desktop that sits firmly in the no-compromises tier. We're talking about a machine built around an AMD Ryzen 9 9900X3D and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 with 32GB of VRAM. If you're searching for a prebuilt that can handle 4K gaming, AI workloads, and heavy content creation without breaking a sweat, this is the kind of rig that shows up on your radar. It's not cheap, with US listings ranging from $5,880 to $6,500, but the spec sheet reads like a wish list.

HP packed 64GB of DDR5-6000 RAM and a massive 6TB of total NVMe SSD storage into this thing. That's a 4TB drive plus a 2TB drive, which means you won't be uninstalling games to make room for your video edits anytime soon. The 1200W power supply gives the RTX 5090 plenty of headroom, and Windows 11 Pro comes preinstalled. It's a workstation disguised as a gaming PC, or maybe the other way around.

Our database puts this OMEN MAX in the top tier for storage and RAM, with the CPU and GPU also ranking among the best we've tracked. The weakest area is compactness, which makes sense. At 22.6kg, this is not a machine you'll be lugging to LAN parties. But if it's going to live on or under your desk and just crush everything you throw at it, the size is a fair trade.

If you're a 1080p or 1440p gamer on a budget, this machine is overkill. You can get a great experience for half the price with something like a mid-range RTX 4070 or 5070 build. If you need a compact PC for a small desk or frequent travel, the 22.6kg weight and large footprint will drive you crazy. And if you're deep in the Apple ecosystem for creative work, the Mac Studio M4 Max is smaller, quieter, and more power-efficient, though it can't match the RTX 5090 for gaming. If you don't need the absolute top-end performance, save your money and look elsewhere.

Should you buy the HP OMEN MAX 45L? If you want a prebuilt that can handle 4K gaming at high refresh rates, run local AI models, and chew through video edits without breaking a sweat, this is one of the best options on the market. The combination of the Ryzen 9 9900X3D and RTX 5090 is about as good as it gets in a consumer desktop, and the 6TB of storage plus 64GB of RAM means you won't be upgrading anything for years.

But it's not for everyone. The price is steep, the case is huge and heavy, and the compactness score in our database is the weakest area. If you're just gaming at 1440p, you can spend half as much and still have a great experience. If you need a machine that does everything at the highest level and you have the budget, this OMEN MAX delivers. Just shop around, because that $620 price spread between retailers is real money.
