Panasonic LUMIX S5II 5II Black-9 2025

★★★★★ 4.7 (107)

The 24.2MP full-frame sensor now integrates Phase Hybrid AF for reliable subject tracking, while the heat-dispersing fan enables unlimited 6K 10-bit video recording. Its Active I.S. stabilization supports walking shots, and the 14+ stop V-Log/V-Gamut capture provides extensive grading latitude with in-camera LUT application. This 740g weather-sealed body is best for hybrid shooters who need unlimited recording for long-form interviews or events without an external recorder.

Opinión de los propietarios

The Word on the Street

4.7/5 (107 reviews)
👍 Buyers are overwhelmingly satisfied, with many saying it exceeded their expectations and left them wanting for nothing.
👍 The new autofocus system is the most praised feature, with users calling it a game-changing upgrade from older Panasonic models.
🤔 A few owners note the camera's heft and wish the L-mount had a wider selection of affordable native lenses.

Performance

The big story here is the new Phase Hybrid AF. With 675 points and subject detection that actually works, it's a night-and-day difference from the contrast-detect-only days. We're seeing it track subjects reliably even in tricky light, which makes that 30fps burst speed actually usable for fast action. The 24.2MP sensor is solid, about average for its class, but the real magic is in the stabilization. The 7-stop IBIS combined with the new Active I.S. for video means you can get smooth walking shots without a gimbal. It's one of the best stabilization systems we've seen. The 3.7M-dot EVF is also a joy to use, clear and lag-free. Battery life is a strong point too, rated for 440 shots, which puts it well above average.

vs Competition

Stacked against the Sony a7R V, the S5II gives up a lot of resolution but fights back with better stabilization and a much lower price. The Fujifilm X-H2S is a speed demon with a stacked sensor, but it's an APS-C camera, so the S5II wins on full-frame depth of field and low-light potential. The Canon EOS R6 Mark III is its most direct rival, offering similar resolution and great AF, but the Panasonic's unlimited recording and superior cooling give it a clear edge for long-form video work. The Nikon Z9 is in a different league, a pro sports tank, but it's also triple the price.

Value & Pricing

Pricing is all over the place, with a spread of $750 across vendors from $1,998 to $2,748. At the low end, this camera is an absolute steal. You're getting a flagship-level autofocus system, incredible stabilization, and unlimited 6K recording for less than two grand. Even at the higher end, it undercuts the Sony a7R V and Nikon Z9 by a significant margin. If you can find it near the $2,000 mark, the price-to-performance ratio is hard to beat.

Overview

The Panasonic LUMIX S5II lands in our database with a 4.7-star average from over 100 reviews, and honestly, the numbers back up the hype. Its autofocus system sits in the 95th percentile, which is a massive leap forward for Panasonic and puts it right up there with the best on the market. The build quality is top of the charts, the stabilization is best-in-class, and the EVF is a standout. It's a camera that feels premium and performs like it, especially for the price.

Common Questions

Q: Is the autofocus really that much better than the original S5?

Absolutely. The new Phase Hybrid AF system puts it in the 95th percentile of all cameras we've tested. It's a fundamental shift from the contrast-detect-only system in the original S5, making subject tracking and eye detection reliable even in low light.

Q: Can it really record video without overheating?

Yes. The built-in fan and heat sink allow for unlimited 6K 10-bit 4:2:2 recording. In our testing and based on user reports, it doesn't shut down due to heat, which is a huge advantage over competitors like the Canon EOS R6 Mark III for long shoots.

Q: How does the L-mount lens selection compare to Sony E-mount?

It's smaller. While Sigma and Leica make excellent L-mount glass, the sheer volume and variety of native and third-party lenses for Sony E-mount is much larger. You'll find most essential focal lengths covered, but the used market and budget options are more limited.

Who Should Skip This

Streamers should definitely skip this one. It scored a disappointing 66 out of 100 in our streaming tests, making it one of the weaker options for that specific use case. If you need a camera primarily as a high-quality webcam or for live streaming to a PC, you'll be fighting the software and connectivity. A dedicated streaming camera or a Sony body with better UVC/UAC support would serve you much better.

Verdict

The LUMIX S5II is the camera Panasonic should have made years ago. By finally nailing the autofocus, they've turned a good hybrid camera into a great one. It's not the highest-resolution sensor on the block, and streamers should look elsewhere, but for a hybrid shooter who needs a rugged, reliable workhorse for both stills and long video takes, this is one of the best values out there right now.
