The proof
Performance
The M3 chip is the star here, and it's not even close. This thing chews through 4K video edits, graphics-heavy games, and multitasking without breaking a sweat. What surprised us most is how much headroom there is. The 8GB of RAM sits at the 67th percentile, which sounds modest, but iPadOS is so well optimized that it rarely matters. The 60Hz display is the one spec that feels dated in 2025, especially when you're scrolling next to a ProMotion screen.

vs Competition
The Samsung Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra has a bigger, better 14.6-inch AMOLED display and includes the S Pen, but it's heavier and Samsung's software update track record is still playing catch-up. The Microsoft Surface Pro 11th Edition runs full Windows, which matters if you need desktop apps, but it's more expensive and the tablet experience is clunkier. The Lenovo Yoga Tab Plus is a solid budget alternative, but it can't touch the M3's raw power or the iPad app ecosystem.

Value & Pricing
At $1,000 USD for the 256GB model, this is not a cheap tablet. But you're getting M3 performance that will stay relevant for years. If you're already in the Apple ecosystem and want a tablet that can actually replace a laptop for light work, this is the sweet spot. The Pro costs hundreds more for features most people won't notice.

Overview
The iPad Air M3 is Apple doing what Apple does best: taking last year's Pro chip, dropping it into a thinner, lighter body, and calling it a day. And honestly? It works. The M3 absolutely flies here, and for most people this is the iPad to buy, not the Pro. The one thing to know is that you're getting flagship-level performance in a package that's actually reasonable to carry around.
Common Questions
Q: Is the 60Hz display a dealbreaker?
For most people, no. If you've never used a 120Hz screen, you won't notice. But once you've scrolled on a ProMotion display, going back to 60Hz feels like wading through molasses. Artists and heavy scrollers should try one in person first.
Q: Can this replace my laptop?
For light work like email, writing, browsing, and media consumption, yes. The M3 handles all of that without breaking a sweat. But if you need desktop apps like full Photoshop or coding environments, get a MacBook or Surface Pro instead.
Q: Is 8GB of RAM enough?
Right now, yes. iPadOS is efficient and apps are optimized. But if you plan to keep this for 4+ years and do heavy multitasking, the 256GB model with 8GB might start to feel tight. The higher storage tiers come with more RAM if you're worried.
Who Should Skip This
If you're a digital artist who needs the smoothest possible drawing experience, the 60Hz display will annoy you. Get the iPad Pro with ProMotion instead. And if you need to run full desktop software, this isn't it. Go grab a Surface Pro or a MacBook Air.
Verdict
Buy it. The iPad Air M3 is the best tablet for most people, period. Unless you specifically need the Pro's 120Hz display or the Surface's Windows compatibility, this is the one. The performance gap between this and the Pro is smaller than ever, and you'll save real money.
