Laowa 4mm f/2.8 Circular Fisheye 4mm
The 210° circular fisheye field of view and bright f/2.8 aperture in a 135g body for Nikon Z APS-C cameras distinguish this lens. Its 3.1-inch close focusing distance and ability to stitch full 360° panoramas from just two shots add practical versatility. This lens best serves Nikon Z APS-C photographers creating immersive virtual tours or extreme close-up circular fisheye images.

Performance
Sharpness is the real surprise here. For a lens this wide and this cheap, the center is genuinely crisp, especially stopped down to f/5.6. Our macro score puts it in the 94th percentile, which sounds absurd for a fisheye until you realize you can focus just over 3 inches from the front element. That lets you get wild close-up shots with a distorted, expansive background. The f/2.8 aperture is also a standout, making it a sneaky-good astrophotography lens on a budget. The optical quality overall is a weak spot, ranking near the bottom of our database, but that's mostly because extreme distortion is the whole point here. You're not buying this for flat field reproduction.

vs Competition
There's nothing that directly competes with this lens at this price. A Nikon Z DX 16-50mm f/3.5-6.3 VR is a far more practical, stabilized zoom for everyday shooting, but it can't touch the Laowa's wild perspective. The Tamron 18-300mm is a do-it-all superzoom, and the Sony 16-50mm PZ is a compact kit lens. None of them are fisheyes. If you need a lens that can do normal things, buy any of those. If you specifically want a circular fisheye image, this is your only option under a grand.

Value & Pricing
Pricing is all over the place, from $149 to $394 depending on the mount and vendor. At the low end, this is an absolute steal for a creative tool. At nearly $400, it's a harder sell when you could grab a used ultra-wide zoom. If you're buying, hunt for the deal around the $150 mark. That's impulse-buy territory for a lens this fun.

Overview
The Laowa 4mm f/2.8 Fisheye is a tiny, weird, and wonderful lens that puts a full circular image on your sensor. It's not for everyone, but if you want a 210° view that makes the world look like a little planet, this is the cheapest ticket in town. The one thing to know is that this lens is a one-trick pony, but it's a trick no other affordable lens can do. It's fully manual, has no electronic contacts, and will absolutely get your fingers in the shot if you're not careful. But for astrophotography, creative video, or just blowing minds at a party, it's a blast.
Common Questions
Q: Will this work on my full-frame Nikon Z camera?
Yes, but you'll get a circular image in the middle of a black frame. It's designed for APS-C, so on full-frame you'll need to crop heavily. Some people love that look for creative projects, but it's not a standard wide-angle lens.
Q: Is it hard to focus since it's fully manual?
Not really. At 4mm, the depth of field is so massive that everything from a few inches to infinity is in focus by f/5.6. You can basically set it and forget it. The bigger challenge is keeping your own hands out of the 210° view.
Q: Can I use this for regular landscape photography?
Honestly, no. The extreme distortion and circular image make it a terrible choice for traditional landscapes. You'd be cropping away most of the frame. Grab a standard wide-angle zoom instead.
Who Should Skip This
If you're looking for a practical wide-angle lens for everyday shooting, this isn't it. Go get the Nikon Z DX 16-50mm VR or a used Tokina 11-16mm instead. This Laowa is for people who specifically want a circular fisheye and are willing to work around its quirks.
Verdict
Buy it if you know exactly why you want a circular fisheye. This lens is a creative weapon for astro-landscapes, weird portraits, and 360° panoramas with just two shots. It's not a daily driver, and you'll curse it when you forget to move your grip. But for the price, it's a unique tool that delivers a look you simply can't fake in post. Just get the cheapest mount version you can find and accept that you'll be cropping out your own knuckles.
