A shockingly good Mini-LED picture and sound for the price, held back by a clunky Fire TV brain and a 60Hz panel that gamers will hate. Fix the settings and it's a budget champ.

We were genuinely surprised by the audio. A 2.0 channel, 20W setup usually sounds thin and lifeless, but this thing has some punch. Dolby Atmos and DTS Virtual:X do some heavy lifting to create a soundstage that feels wider than the screen. On the flip side, the display's peak brightness of 600 nits is solid for the price, but the viewing angles are rough. You'll want to be sitting dead center. The AI upscaling is a nice touch for cable TV and older shows, but the initial stuttering on streaming apps right out of the box is a headache you shouldn't have to deal with.

The Hisense QD7's natural enemy is the TCL QM6K. The TCL runs Google TV, which most people find snappier and less ad-heavy than Fire TV, and its color accuracy is often better out of the box. But the Hisense fights back with better sound and a more impactful Dolby Vision experience. If you're considering the Samsung QN85D or LG QNED82, you're in a different price bracket entirely. The QD7 isn't as bright or as smooth for sports as those, but it gets you 80% of the way there for half the cost. For pure value, it's a two-horse race between Hisense and TCL, and your choice comes down to whether you prefer Google TV or can tolerate Fire OS for better audio.

This is a no-brainer for a bright-room streamer on a tight budget. The picture quality you get for the money is the real deal. We saw a wild price spread from $203 to over $11,000 across vendors, which is clearly some third-party seller nonsense. Stick to a reputable retailer like Best Buy where the price is grounded in reality, and you're getting a steal. Just don't pay a premium for it.

The Hisense QD7 is the budget Mini-LED TV that makes you question why you'd spend more. For a 50-inch set, the picture quality is shockingly good once you spend five minutes fixing the out-of-box settings. The colors pop, Dolby Vision content looks rich, and the sound is better than it has any right to be at this price. But it's not all smooth sailing. The Fire TV interface can be a sluggish mess, and if you're a serious gamer, the 60Hz panel and middling gaming performance are a hard pass.

If you're a gamer looking for a smooth 120Hz experience, this isn't it. Go get a TCL QM6K with Google TV or step up to a Hisense U7N for proper HDMI 2.1 gaming features. If you can't stand a laggy smart TV interface and refuse to use an external streamer, the Fire OS here will drive you up the wall.

Buy it for the picture and sound, but only if you're willing to spend 10 minutes calibrating it and can live with a sluggish smart TV interface. This is a fantastic secondary TV for a bedroom or a primary set for someone who just wants a great movie night without a soundbar. The 50-inch size is a sweet spot, and the Mini-LED backlight delivers real contrast you can see. Just don't expect it to be a gaming monitor, and maybe budget for a streaming stick if the Fire TV lag drives you nuts.
