Nikon 2197_EDI_1
Its 55–300mm focal range (82.5–450mm full-frame equivalent) and VR II stabilization delivering 4 stops of shake reduction make it a practical telephoto zoom for Nikon DX bodies. A silent wave motor enables quick, quiet autofocus, and the 530g build with Super Integrated Coating keeps it compact while suppressing flare. This lens is best for budget-conscious Nikon DSLR users needing reach for daylight sports, wildlife, and travel.
Snapshot
The 30-Second Version
Still a capable superzoom with great stabilization, but fresh competition from Sigma and Tamron means you should cross-shop carefully before buying. The autofocus speed and extended range of newer rivals make this a tougher sell than it used to be.

vs Competition
The field of all-in-one zooms has gotten crowded, and the Sigma 16-300mm f/3.5-6.7 DC OS is the most direct threat to this lens. It pushes the range even further while staying surprisingly compact. The Tamron 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VXD brings a faster, more precise linear autofocus motor to the party and has earned a loyal following on Sony E-mount. If you can sacrifice the long end, the Canon RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM is in a different league optically, with a constant f/2.8 aperture that makes it a low-light monster, though it costs significantly more. For Micro Four Thirds shooters, the Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 50-200mm f/2.8-4.0 offers a premium build and weather sealing that rivals this lens, albeit with a shorter reach. The Nikon AF-S DX 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR is an older DSLR design, but its sharpness and vibration reduction still hold up well on adapted bodies, making it a budget-conscious alternative if you don't need the extreme telephoto.

Verdict
With the arrival of the Sigma 16-300mm and the continued strength of the Tamron 18-300mm, this lens no longer enjoys the clear runway it once did. The competition has caught up in range and, in some cases, surpassed it in autofocus speed. It remains a solid performer with excellent stabilization, but the value proposition has shifted. You now have genuinely compelling alternatives that either go wider, focus faster, or cost less. It's still a good lens, but it's no longer the default choice it was a year ago.
