Performance
What surprised us most is how sharp this thing is wide open at f/2.8. Three aspherical elements and four ED elements (yes, the spec sheet says four ED, even though the marketing copy got it wrong) keep distortion minimal and corners crisp. The Silent Wave Motor is fast enough that we never thought about focus lag, even at 14mm where you'd expect some hunting. One thing to know: there's no VR here, and at 1000g, handheld video will show some shake. But on a gimbal or tripod, it's a non-issue.

vs Competition
The obvious cross-shop here is the old AF-S 14-24mm f/2.8G for F-mount, which some people still run on the FTZ adapter. The Z version is lighter, sharper in the corners, and adds that rear filter slot, but the F-mount lens can be found used for way less. If you're shooting APS-C or looking for a budget ultra-wide, the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN is a solid budget pick, though it's not in the same full-frame league. For travel shooters who want range over raw wide-angle performance, a superzoom like the Tamron 28-300mm is a totally different tool, but it trades away critical sharpness for convenience.

Value & Pricing
Pricing is all over the place depending on where you look. In the US, we saw listings from USD 682 all the way up to USD 2,497, so shop around before you commit. If you're in Canada, the spread is CAD 1,496 to CAD 2,149. The low end of those ranges is a genuinely great deal for this level of optical performance. At full MSRP, it's harder to swallow, but the image quality earns its keep if you shoot professionally.

Overview
The Nikon NIKKOR Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S is the best ultra-wide zoom you can put on a Z body right now. It's crazy sharp, surprisingly light for what it does, and it handles everything from astro to architecture without breaking a sweat. If you're shooting landscapes or interiors on a Z7 or Z9 and you don't own this, you're leaving image quality on the table.
Common Questions
Q: Does this lens have image stabilization?
No. There's no VR in the lens itself. If you're on a Z body with IBIS, you'll get some stabilization from the camera. But on older bodies or for handheld video, bring a tripod or gimbal.
Q: Can I use normal screw-on filters with this lens?
It has a rear gel filter slot built in, which is the easy route. For front filters, you need 112mm thread-on filters, which are huge and pricey. Budget for that if you want ND or polarizer options up front.
Q: Is this better than the older F-mount 14-24mm f/2.8G?
Yes, optically and ergonomically. It's lighter, sharper in the corners, and has better coatings. But the F-mount version is still a great used bargain if you're adapting to a Z body and want to save serious cash.
Who Should Skip This
If you shoot portraits most of the time, skip it. The bokeh on this lens lands in the bottom quarter of all lenses we track, and 14-24mm is a terrible portrait range anyway. Grab a fast 50mm or 85mm prime instead and put your money there.
Verdict
Buy it. If you're on the Z system and you need an ultra-wide zoom, this is the one. The sharpness alone justifies the cost, and the build quality and weather sealing mean it'll survive real outdoor use. The lack of VR stings for handheld video, but for stills shooters and anyone on a tripod, this lens is as close to flawless as ultra-wide zooms get.
