Western Digital SSD

The WD_BLACK SN850P is a blazing fast, officially licensed PS5 SSD that installs in minutes and just works. Its random performance is top-tier, and the heatsink is included. It's pricey, but if you want zero hassle PS5 storage expansion, this is the one to get.

Sequential reads hit 7,300 MB/s and writes land at 6,600 MB/s, which is right at the ceiling of what the PS5's PCIe 4.0 interface can handle. Random performance is where this thing really shines though, 1,200K read IOPS and 1,100K write IOPS put it in the 95th percentile in our database. That translates to snappy game loads and fast texture streaming. Endurance sits at 1,200 TBW, which is solid but not class-leading. For a console drive that mostly reads game data, you'll likely replace the console before you wear this out.

Against the Samsung 9100 Pro, the SN850P holds its own on speed but Samsung's drive often comes in cheaper and offers better endurance. The Crucial T710 and Kingston Fury Renegade are both strong alternatives that match or beat this drive's raw numbers without the official PS5 badge. The Seagate FireCuda 530R is another solid pick with similar performance and a heatsink option. Where the SN850P wins is simplicity. It's the only one here that's officially licensed, so if you don't want to think about firmware updates or compatibility lists, this is the easy button.

Here's the thing. You can find this drive listed between USD 400 and USD 470 depending on the vendor, and that spread matters. The best deal we're seeing is on the lower end of that range, so shop around before you click buy. At USD 400, it's a reasonable premium for guaranteed PS5 compatibility and top-tier speed. At USD 470, you're paying a lot for the official license. If you're value-conscious and willing to risk a non-licensed drive, there are cheaper options that perform similarly. But if you want zero hassle, the price is easier to swallow.

The WD_BLACK SN850P is Western Digital's officially licensed PS5 storage expansion, and it nails the basics. You get 2TB of PCIe 4.0 NVMe storage with a heatsink already attached, so installation is basically open the slot, screw it in, done. No firmware headaches, no guessing about compatibility.

Our database puts this drive's speed in the 88th percentile and its random performance in the 95th percentile. That's not just marketing talk. It's genuinely one of the fastest drives you can drop into a PS5 right now. The catch? You pay for that official license and peace of mind.

Skip this if you're on a tight budget or comfortable with a non-licensed drive. The Crucial T710 and Kingston Fury Renegade offer similar performance for less money, and the Samsung 9100 Pro gives you better endurance. If you don't own a PS5, this drive's main selling point is wasted on you. And if you're the type who enjoys tinkering with firmware and comparing spec sheets, you'll find better value elsewhere.

If you own a PS5 and want to expand storage without any research, forum scrolling, or second-guessing, buy this. It's fast, reliable, and installs in minutes. The official license means Sony has tested it, and that peace of mind is worth something. If you're comfortable comparing specs and don't mind a non-licensed drive, you can save money elsewhere. But for most PS5 owners who just want more storage that works, this is the no-brainer pick.
