The HP Stream is a cheap, colorful laptop that's fine for one thing at a time, but 4GB of RAM and a terrible screen make it a tough sell. The bundled 1TB docking station is the best part of the package. Only buy it if you find it for under $200 and accept that it might not last.

This thing is slow. The Intel N150 and 4GB of RAM sit in the 2nd percentile of all laptops we track, which is a polite way of saying it's some of the weakest hardware you can buy new. You can browse the web and type up a document, but don't expect to have more than a few tabs open without things getting choppy. The integrated graphics are fine for streaming video but completely useless for gaming, landing at a dismal 12.4 out of 100 in our best-for-gaming score. On the plus side, the 128GB eMMC plus the included 1TB docking station SSD gives you a surprising amount of room for files, putting storage in the 74th percentile. Just be prepared to wait for Windows updates, which several owners note can take forever.

Stacked against the Acer Swift SF16, the HP Stream looks like a toy. The Swift has a sharper screen, a real processor, and enough RAM to actually get work done. The Lenovo Yoga 7 is in a different universe entirely with its 2-in-1 design and far superior build quality. Even the MSI Cyborg, a budget gaming laptop, offers a dedicated GPU for not much more money. The only thing the Stream has over these competitors is a lower entry price, and even that advantage vanishes when you look at the NIMO N152, which often undercuts it with similar specs.

Pricing is all over the map, ranging from $166 to $663 across vendors. At the low end, you're getting a functional typewriter with a free 1TB drive, which is hard to argue with. But as the price climbs toward $400 or $500, you're entering territory where a used ThinkPad or a last-gen Acer Swift will run circles around this machine. If you can snag it for under $200, it's a disposable web surfer. Pay a penny more and you're getting fleeced.

The HP Stream is a budget laptop that looks the part. It's thin, light, and comes in some genuinely nice colors. The bundled docking station with a 1TB SSD is a clever add-on, giving you way more storage than you'd expect at this price. But the moment you start using it, the corners HP cut become painfully obvious. The 4GB of RAM and that low-end Intel N150 processor struggle with basic multitasking, and the 768p display is a throwback to a decade ago.

Anyone who needs to run more than a browser and a word processor at the same time should skip this. If you plan to keep your laptop for more than two years, the reliability issues alone are a dealbreaker. Look at a refurbished Lenovo ThinkPad or a Chromebook instead for a similar price and far better longevity.

The HP Stream is a single-task machine for people with rock-bottom expectations. It's fine for a student who only needs a web browser and Word, or as a secondary device for travel. But the reliability horror stories from owners are a red flag we can't ignore. If you need a laptop that will last more than a year without keys popping off or the battery giving up, keep looking.
