In direct sun, you can actually see the screen, which is more than you can say for a typical indoor set that maxes out at 400 nits. The surprise, though, is the 1100:1 contrast ratio. Even with local dimming off the table (it's a direct LED without full array), dark scenes look a bit gray, especially after sundown. The 8ms response time and 60Hz panel are fine for casual sports and movies, but forget about competitive gaming. Audio from the 16W speakers is thin; plan on a soundbar if you want to hear dialog over a breeze.

Indoor TV heavyweights like the Sony BRAVIA 5 and LG C5 OLED will smoke the Solis in a dark room with infinite contrast and better HDR. The LG C5 in particular is a stunner at half the price, but it's not rated for a single drop of rain. Samsung makes The Terrace outdoor line, which is a more direct competitor, but that wasn't in our benchmark set this cycle. Among the list we tested, the TCL QM8K hits higher peak brightness for about $1,000 less, but it'll fail the first time a sprinkler hits it. So your comparison is really: do I need outdoor ruggedness or not? If yes, the Solis is a top-tier choice. If you're just putting a TV on a covered porch, skip the premium and grab an indoor model with a cheap cover.

The picture is crisp and punchy outdoors, though the middling contrast ratio means black levels are just okay. Gaming and audio are afterthoughts, and the smart platform is snappy but nothing special. If you've got a sunny deck or poolside spot where a regular TV would self-destruct, this one actually makes sense.

If you're expecting a high-end theater experience or a gaming monitor, this isn't it. The contrast is weak for dark rooms, and the 60Hz panel with no VRR is a letdown for consoles. Get a Samsung QN90D or an LG C5 instead if you're indoors. Also, if your outdoor area has any shade at all, a regular TV with a waterproof cover will save you hundreds.
