Intel Core i5 X-Series 7640X 4-core LGA2066
The unlocked 4.0GHz base clock and LGA 2066 socket on the Kaby Lake-X chip provide a direct entry point to the X299 platform’s overclocking headroom and quad-channel memory potential. Its single-core PassMark score of 2541 delivers competent VR-ready performance when paired with a discrete GPU, though the 112W TDP and lack of included cooler demand robust aftermarket cooling. This processor is best for budget-conscious system builders who prioritize future scalability to higher core-count X-Series CPUs over immediate multi-threaded productivity.

- Q4 201750/100
Mixed reviews: some praise overclocking and gaming performance, but others warn of high cost, platform expense, and a strong recommendation to avoid in favor of AMD Ryzen.
- Excellent overclocking potential, reaching 5.2GHz with good cooling.
- Strongly advised against purchase; called garbage and recommended AMD Ryzen instead.
- Great gaming performance but overpriced compared to i7-8700K and higher platform cost.
- Quad-core design may lack future longevity for gaming.
- Q3 201787/100
Buyers report strong overclocking performance and stable operation, with one user noting high temperatures under extreme stress tests but effective throttling.
- Overclocking to 5.0 GHz runs great with no issues.
- Good upgrade from i7-7700K for high-end gaming or work machines.
- Stress testing shows high temps (100°C) under Prime95 but CPU throttles safely.
- No onboard graphics, but acceptable for this category with discrete GPU.
