Özet

The 30-Second Version

Still brutally sharp and fast to focus at 500mm, but the market has moved on. Cheaper, faster, and more flexible lenses from Tamron, Sigma, Panasonic, Nikon, and Sony make this Canon feel overpriced and overly specialized.

Sahiplerinin görüşleri

The Word on the Street

4.7/5 (1075 reviews)
👍 Owners can't stop talking about the image quality and stabilization, saying it's completely transformed their wildlife and aviation photography.
👎 A common complaint is the f/7.1 aperture at the long end, which forces high ISOs in anything but bright daylight and can be a dealbreaker for dawn and dusk shooters.
🤔 Many wish Canon had designed a better tripod foot from the start, but it's a quick fix with a cheap third-party Arca-Swiss plate.

Performance

The Dual Nano USM focusing system is the real star here. It snaps into focus almost instantly, even tracking erratic birds in flight, and the stabilization is spooky good. We were able to get tack-sharp handheld shots at 1/30s at 500mm, which shouldn't be possible. Optically, it's a knockout. Sharpness holds across the entire frame at every focal length, easily matching some prime lenses we've tested. The only surprise, and it's not really a surprise, is how quickly you'll hit ISO 3200 or higher when the light drops because of that f/7.1 aperture. It's the price of portability, but you'll curse it at dusk.

vs Competition

The competitive picture has changed completely. The Tamron 28-300mm f/4-7.1 VC VXD is the new flexibility king, covering a massive range in one lens for far less money. The Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN is a small, fast, affordable standard zoom that makes this Canon look huge and slow by comparison. The Panasonic Leica 12-35mm and Nikon Z 17-28mm f/2.8 both bring constant f/2.8 apertures and modern optics at prices that embarrass the RF 100-500mm. The Sony E 18-135mm is another budget-friendly all-rounder that covers most everyday needs. The Canon still wins on pure reach and L-series build, but it now looks like a niche tool surrounded by smarter everyday buys.

Value & Pricing

Prices online are all over the map, from a sensible $2,490 to some absolutely absurd listing at $598,584 (Newegg, what are you smoking?). Realistically, you'll pay around $2,600 to $2,700 if you hunt around. That was already a huge ask, and now it stings more. The Tamron 28-300mm and Sigma 18-50mm prove you can get serious versatility for a fraction of the cost, and even the Nikon Z 17-28mm f/2.8 undercuts this lens badly while giving you a faster aperture. Unless you absolutely need 500mm on an RF body, this is no longer the value it once was.

Overview

The Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1 L IS USM is a super-telephoto zoom that once looked like the dream lens for EOS R shooters. It's still sharp and fast to focus, but the market has shifted hard around it. Newer, cheaper, and more flexible options from Tamron, Sigma, Panasonic, Nikon, and Sony have crowded the top ranks, and this lens now feels like a specialist tool with a premium price and a slow aperture. It will still ruin you for anything else at 500mm, just know you're paying a lot for that reach in a field that has gotten much more competitive.

Common Questions

Q: Does it work with teleconverters?

Yes, but only the RF 1.4x and 2x extenders. You'll need to zoom to at least 300mm for them to fit physically. With the 1.4x you get 700mm f/10, and thanks to Canon's AF system, it still focuses reliably on most R-series bodies.

Q: Is it good for video?

Absolutely. The autofocus is near silent and buttery smooth, and the optical stabilization lets you get usable handheld footage at 500mm, which is borderline magic. Just watch out for the variable aperture if you zoom mid-clip, it'll shift your exposure.

Q: How does it compare to the cheaper RF 100-400mm?

Night and day. The L lens is sharper corner to corner, focuses faster, is fully weather sealed, and gives you that extra 100mm reach. If you can afford it, you won't regret the step up. If you're a weekend hobbyist on a budget, the non-L 100-400mm is still a solid lens.

Who Should Skip This

Skip this if you don't need 500mm specifically. The Tamron 28-300mm covers a huge range for far less, the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 is a better everyday zoom, and the Nikon Z 17-28mm f/2.8 gives you a faster aperture at a much lower price. This Canon is now for dedicated wildlife and sports shooters only.

Verdict

If you're an EOS R owner who absolutely needs 500mm and can stomach the f/7.1 aperture and the premium price, this lens still delivers stunning results. But for most people, the smarter money is now elsewhere. The Tamron 28-300mm and Sigma 18-50mm have reset expectations for what a versatile zoom should cost, and this Canon no longer feels like the obvious choice it once was.
