The 30-Second Version

Painfully slow as-is, but a cheap RAM and SSD upgrade turns it into a decent beater laptop. Only buy it if it's under $150 and you're not afraid to open it up.

What owners think

The Word on the Street

4.1/5 (3578 reviews)
👍 Owners consistently praise how light and easy to carry this thing is, making it a favorite for students running between classes.
👎 The most common gripe is the glacial performance, with multiple people saying it struggles with basic web browsing right out of the box.
🤔 A few tinkerers love that they could upgrade the RAM and storage, but also admit the process is a bit of a pain to actually do.

The proof

Performance

We were genuinely surprised by the upgradeability. A few owners in our database have cracked this thing open and added more RAM and a real SSD, which completely transforms it from a frustrating paperweight into a genuinely usable cheap laptop. Out of the box, though, the 4GB of RAM is a killer. That's in the 1st percentile of all laptops we've tracked, which is as bad as it gets. The 64GB eMMC storage is also painfully slow and tiny, landing in the bottom 5th percentile. You'll be fighting 'low disk space' warnings from day one.

vs Competition

A used Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 1 is in a completely different universe for not much more money, offering a great keyboard, solid build, and real performance. If you must have something new and cheap, the ASUS Vivobook Go 14 often comes with a better screen and a more capable processor for a small price bump. This HP only makes sense if you find it for an absolute steal and are willing to get your hands dirty with upgrades.

Price

Value & Pricing

The value story here is weird. We've seen this model listed anywhere from $77 to over $46,000, which is clearly some marketplace nonsense. The real price for a refurbished unit is usually well under $200. At that price, it's a disposable web browser and word processor. Just don't pay more than $150 for it, and factor in the cost of a RAM stick and a small SSD if you want it to be pleasant to use. The best deals we've seen are from Best Buy's open-box section.

Overview

The HP 14-dq3000dx is a budget laptop that makes one thing clear right away: you get what you pay for. It's incredibly light and portable, and the price is low enough to be almost an impulse buy. But the performance is rough. With just 4GB of RAM and a sluggish Celeron processor, this thing chokes on more than a couple of browser tabs. It's a machine for a single, simple task at a time, and nothing more.

Common Questions

Q: Can I install regular Windows programs on this?

Yes, but you have to switch out of Windows 11 S Mode first. It's a free, one-way switch in the Microsoft Store. Do it immediately, or you'll be stuck with only Store apps.

Q: Is the RAM really upgradeable?

Yes, despite what some specs say. There's a single DDR4 slot inside. Swapping the 4GB stick for an 8GB or 16GB one is the single best thing you can do for this laptop.

Who Should Skip This

If you need to run anything more demanding than a web browser and Microsoft Word, this isn't it. Creative apps, coding, or even heavy multitasking will bring it to its knees. Go get a refurbished Lenovo ThinkPad or Dell Latitude instead. You'll get a much better screen, build quality, and performance for about the same money.

Verdict

Don't buy this laptop expecting a good out-of-the-box experience. It's not. It's slow, cramped, and the screen is a bummer. But if you're on the tightest possible budget and are comfortable with a screwdriver, it's a surprisingly fun little project machine. For everyone else, a used business laptop is a vastly smarter buy.
