AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 6-core AM4

★★★★★ 4.8 (34,501)

Performance

The 4.6GHz boost clock and 32MB of L3 cache put this chip in the top tier for gaming, and our PassMark data backs it up. Single-thread performance lands in the 82nd percentile, which is wild for a chip this old. Multi-thread sits at 78th percentile, so it's no slouch for productivity either. What surprised us most is how well it handles modern titles. 100+ FPS in popular games isn't marketing fluff, it's just what this thing does. The 65W TDP means it sips power while doing it.

vs Competition

Against the Intel Core Ultra 7 265KF, the 5600X loses on raw multi-thread performance but wins on price and platform maturity. The 265KF is a newer architecture with more cores, but you'll pay a premium for it. The Xeon E5-2637 V2 and those Core i9 X-Series chips are server and HEDT parts, not really gaming competitors. If you're on AM4 already, the 5600X is the obvious upgrade path. If you're building new, it's still worth considering unless you need DDR5 and the latest platform features.

Prix

Value & Pricing

At USD 140 from the right seller, this chip is an absolute steal. At USD 380 from a third-party scalper, you're getting ripped off. The spread across US listings is USD 240, which is insane. Shop around, check Newegg's tray listings, and don't pay more than USD 200 for this thing. In Canada, the CAD 220 to CAD 260 range is much tighter, so you're safe either way.

En savoir plus

Overview

The Ryzen 5 5600X is the CPU that refuses to die, and honestly, we're fine with that. Three years after launch, this 6-core, 12-thread chip still delivers elite gaming performance at a price that makes Intel's newer offerings look silly. The one thing to know? If you're building a gaming rig on AM4, this is still the smartest money you can spend.

Common Questions

Q: Do I need a separate GPU with the 5600X?

Yes. This chip has no integrated graphics, so you'll need a discrete GPU. Budget for something like an RX 6600 or RTX 3060 at minimum.

Q: Will my motherboard need a BIOS update?

Probably. If you're on an older B450 or X470 board, you'll likely need to flash the BIOS before the 5600X will boot. Most B550 and X570 boards ship ready, but check your board's support page.

Q: Is the tray version worth buying?

If you already have a cooler or plan to buy a better one, yes. The tray version saves you money and the stock Wraith Stealth cooler is mediocre anyway. Just don't forget to budget for cooling.

Who Should Skip This

If you're building a brand new system and want DDR5, PCIe 5.0, or an upgrade path to future CPUs, this isn't it. Go AM5 with a Ryzen 5 7600 or 7600X instead. Also skip it if you need integrated graphics for a budget build without a GPU, the 5600G is the better choice there.

Verdict

Buy it. The Ryzen 5 5600X is the best value gaming CPU on AM4, period. It's fast, efficient, and cheap when you find it at the right price. The lack of a cooler and integrated graphics are minor annoyances, not dealbreakers. If you're still on a Ryzen 2600 or 3700X, this is the upgrade you've been waiting for.
