• CPU power is not close. The M5 Max scores 57,744 in multi-core benchmarks vs the Core Ultra 9 285H's 34,200, a 1.7x gap that shows up in AI workloads (100 vs 55 AI score) and developer tasks (99 vs 80).
• RAM is a blowout. The Mac has 128GB vs 32GB on the HP, and the HP's RAM is soldered so you can't upgrade it later. For large datasets or heavy multitasking, the Mac is in a different league.
• Gaming flips the script. The HP's RTX 5070 scores 28,703 in GPU benchmarks vs the Mac's 22,130, and the gaming score is 96 vs 61. The Mac is not a gaming machine, period.
• Display trade-off. The HP has a 3K OLED panel that owners rave about, but it tops out at 500 nits. The Mac's Mini-LED hits 1,600 nits, which matters for HDR work and bright rooms.
• Price gap is massive. The Mac config here runs around $3,099+ while the HP is roughly $1,400 to $1,800, and open-box units make it even cheaper. Owners consistently call the HP's open-box value a major plus.
