Choose Acer Nitro 5 if...
The Acer is for someone on a strict sub-$600 used market budget who just needs to play older esports titles or do basic schoolwork. It's a 2019 budget laptop, so set your expectations accordingly.
Choose ASUS ROG Zephyrus if...
Grab the ASUS if you need a do-it-all portable powerhouse for modern AAA gaming, AI work, or creative tasks and have the budget for a premium machine. It's basically the best ultraportable gaming laptop you can buy right now.
Key Differences
- The ASUS's Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 scores 35,028 in multi-core benchmarks versus the Acer's i5-9300H at 7,412. That's a 4.7x gap, meaning the ASUS chews through rendering and compiling while the Acer is still loading the project.
- Gaming performance is in completely different leagues. The RTX 5080 with 16GB GDDR7 scores 26,326, while the GTX 1650 with 4GB GDDR5 manages just 7,872. You're looking at maxed-out Cyberpunk 2077 with path tracing versus struggling through medium settings on older games.
- RAM and storage tell the same story. 32GB LPDDR5X and a 2TB SSD on the ASUS versus 8GB DDR4 and a 256GB drive on the Acer. The Acer can't even hold a modern Call of Duty install without an external drive, and 8GB of RAM chokes on Chrome tabs.
- Despite the spec massacre, the Acer actually holds a 4.6/5 rating from over 5,400 reviews compared to the ASUS's 4.7/5 from 242. The Acer was a reliable workhorse for its price point, while ASUS owners mention fan noise and software bloat as real annoyances on an otherwise stellar machine.
